Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of CaloAfrica ("we", "us", the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. The Service

CaloAfrica is a calorie and nutrition tracking tool with a focus on African foods. It lets you log meals manually, scan packaged-food barcodes (via the Open Food Facts database), log meals from photos (via automated vision analysis), and track your weight and progress over time. Some foods in our database are reviewed and verified by our admin team; others are marked as sample or user-submitted so you know what you're looking at.

2. Health & Nutrition Disclaimer

CaloAfrica provides calorie and nutrition estimates for informational and tracking purposes only. Nutrition values — whether sourced from our food database, barcode lookups, or photo-based analysis — are approximations and may contain errors or inaccuracies.

The Service is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. It is not a substitute for professional medical or dietary advice. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional, such as a doctor or registered dietitian, before starting a weight-management or dietary program, especially if you are pregnant or nursing, have a medical condition, or have a history of disordered eating. Do not disregard or delay seeking professional medical advice because of anything you see in the app.

3. Your Account

To use CaloAfrica, you agree that:

  • You are at least 16 years old;
  • The registration information you provide is accurate and kept up to date;
  • You are responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for all activity that occurs under your account;
  • You will notify us promptly if you suspect unauthorized use of your account; and
  • Each account is for a single individual's personal use, unless we agree otherwise in writing.

4. Acceptable Use

When using CaloAfrica, you agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law;
  • Scrape, copy, or systematically extract data from our food database or other users' content;
  • Attempt to reverse engineer, probe, or interfere with the Service, its security, or its infrastructure;
  • Upload photos or other content that are illegal, infringing, abusive, or that depict anyone other than yourself without consent;
  • Submit non-food images or otherwise abuse the photo-analysis feature in a way intended to overload or manipulate it;
  • Impersonate any person or entity, or misrepresent your affiliation with any person or entity; or
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to another user's account or data.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules, at our discretion.

5. Your Content

You retain ownership of the photos, diary entries, and other content you submit. By submitting content, you grant us a license to store, process, and display it back to you within the Service, and to use aggregated or anonymized data (for example, to improve our food database or vision-analysis accuracy). Food items you submit for the shared database may be reviewed by our admin team before being marked as verified.

6. Third-Party Services

The Service relies on third-party providers, including Supabase (hosting, database, authentication, storage), Open Food Facts (barcode product data), Anthropic's Claude API (photo-based food analysis), and Resend (transactional email). We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or content of these third-party services, and your use of features built on them may also be subject to those providers' own terms.

7. Termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from your account settings; see our Privacy Policy for how your data is handled after deletion. We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service if you violate these Terms or if we discontinue the Service.

8. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that nutrition estimates, food database entries, or vision-analysis results are complete, accurate, or error-free, or that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, CaloAfrica and its team will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, health outcomes, or other harm arising from your use of, or reliance on, the Service or the nutrition estimates it provides. Our total liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will not exceed the amount you paid us, if any, in the twelve months preceding the claim.

10. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in-app or by email. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
